I’ve watched “Pumping Iron“, a documentary on the world of Bodybuilding, starred the great Arnold Schwarzenegger, a number of times. From the same producers comes “Generation Iron“. This documentary – examines the professional sport of bodybuilding today and gives the audience front row access to the lives of the top 7 bodybuilders in the sport as they train to compete in the world’s most premiere bodybuilding stage – Mr. Olympia.
The movie was released in September 2013, but it became available on DVD in July/August 2014. In the film, we are given access to the lives of current bodybuilding stars Phil Heath (defending champion and Mr. Olympia 2012), Kai Greene, Branch Warren, Dennis Wolf, Victor Martinez, Hidetada Yamagishi as well as ambitious newcomer Ben Pakulski and European sensation Roelly Winklaar on their journey to be crowned Mr. Olympia.
Just like in Pumping Iron, where the actual competition was filmed, we get to see the 2013 Mr. Olympia competition, and a great-to-watch rivalry between Phil Heath (“The Gift”) and Kai Greene. We also learn how the bodybuilding has transitioned over the past 30 years; we get to see bigger bodybuilders, greater separation, and bigger stage than before.
As a bodybuilding fan, and a weightlifter, I would highly recommend ‘Generation Iron’ movie for anyone who is into Bodybuilding or is planning to begin.
